The J-1 Teacher Program: how a Pakistani teacher can teach in a US school for three years

The J-1 Teacher Program is a United States exchange programme. A qualified teacher from Pakistan can work as a full-time teacher in an American primary or secondary school for three years, with extensions possible. It is a real government programme with real rules, and it is also surrounded by agents who sell it for money. This article gives you the rules from the source, so you can judge any offer you receive.

One thing first: this is a US programme, and ApplyEuro works on European universities. We do not process J-1 applications and we have no sponsor partnerships. We wrote this because readers asked, and because the official rules are scattered across several pages. Everything below comes from the US State Department's J-1 website and the SEVIS fee page of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, checked on 27 October 2026. Rules change; confirm with your sponsor before you pay anything.

What the programme is

You are placed in an accredited US school as a teacher of record, which means you run your own classes with full responsibility, not as an assistant. The base period is three years. The host school can ask your sponsor for an extension of one or two years at a time, and the State Department puts no limit on how many extensions can be granted. Extensions are not automatic; each one is a fresh request.

It is an exchange programme, so it has an exchange side. Every year you must run one activity that shows your classroom, school or community something about Pakistani culture, and one activity that connects your American students with students in another country, preferably Pakistan. Sponsors check that both happen.

Who can apply

The State Department lists these conditions. All of them must be true for you.

RequirementWhat it means for you
DegreeA degree equivalent to a US bachelor's degree, in education or in the subject you will teach.
ExperienceAt least 24 months of teaching or related professional experience.
Currently teachingYou must be working as a teacher in Pakistan when you apply. If you are not, you can still qualify if you finished an advanced degree within the last 12 months and have two years of full-time teaching within the last eight years.
EnglishSufficient proficiency in English. The sponsor must verify it.
State rulesYou must meet the teaching standards of the US state where the school is. These differ by state.
CharacterGood reputation and character.
PositionA full-time teaching job at an accredited US primary or secondary school. Pre-kindergarten teachers may teach only language immersion.

If you can repeat the programme later: yes, but only after you have lived outside the United States for two years, and only if you still meet every condition above.

You cannot apply directly. You apply through a sponsor.

There is no form you send to a school or to the embassy. The State Department designates sponsor organisations, and only a designated sponsor can screen you, match you with a host school, and issue the document the visa depends on. The official list is on the State Department's sponsor page. Pick a sponsor from that list and contact it directly. The sponsor then supervises your application from start to finish.

The sponsor is also your protection. By rule it must give you, in writing, a summary of the programme's duration and location, the fees and costs, the teaching requirements and your compensation package before you commit. If someone offers you a US teaching job without a written summary like this, or is not on the official list, you are not looking at the J-1 Teacher Program.

The steps, in order

  • 1. Find a designated sponsor on the official list and apply to it. Expect to prove your degree, your experience and your English.
  • 2. The sponsor screens you and matches you with a host school. Schools must also meet the sponsor's standards.
  • 3. The sponsor issues your DS-2019, the Certificate of Eligibility for J-1 status. It includes an estimate of the programme's cost. Without this form there is no visa.
  • 4. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee: $220 for J visa applicants. It is paid online at fmjfee.com, by card. Keep the receipt for your interview.
  • 5. Apply for the visa: the online visa application form and an interview at the US embassy or consulate. The consular officer makes the final decision; the DS-2019 lets you ask for the interview, it does not guarantee the visa.
  • 6. Travel and start. Your sponsor stays your main contact for the whole programme, and monitors your performance.

What it costs, and what you are paid

ItemAmount, and who states it
SEVIS I-901 fee$220, set by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement
Visa application feeSet by the US Embassy in Pakistan; check the current amount before paying
Sponsor programme feesVary by sponsor; must be given to you in writing
Flights, health insurance, first weeks of living costsYour own; health insurance for the programme is required and your sponsor states the minimum cover
Your salaryPart of the written compensation package from your sponsor and host school

We do not print salary figures because the official pages do not. Your written summary must state yours. Read it before you pay a single rupee to anyone.

Bringing your family

Your spouse and your unmarried children under 21 can apply for J-2 visas and come with you, or join you later. They may study. A J-2 spouse may work, but only after arriving in the United States and obtaining an Employment Authorization Document from the Department of Homeland Security. One rule surprises people: money earned by a J-2 cannot be used to support you, the J-1 holder. Your own finances must stand on their own. A child who turns 21 loses J-2 status.

The two-year home-country rule

Some J-1 visitors are subject to the two-year home-country physical presence requirement. It applies when the programme is funded by your government or the US government, when your field is on the State Department's skills list for your country, or after graduate medical training. If it applies to you, you must return and live in Pakistan for a cumulative two years after the programme before you can benefit from certain employment-based or family-based US visas. A waiver can be requested through the State Department's J-Visa Waiver Division, but it is not automatic.

Ask your sponsor plainly whether this rule applies to you, and get the answer before you accept. Someone who plans to stay in the United States after the programme needs to know this at the start, not at the end.

Three mistakes to avoid

  • Paying an agent for a placement. Only a designated sponsor can place you. Check the official list; if the name is not there, walk away.
  • Accepting without the written summary. Fees, costs, duration and salary must be in writing from the sponsor. That is their obligation, not a favour.
  • Treating the visa as certain. The DS-2019 gets you an interview. The consular officer decides. Do not resign from your school in Pakistan before the visa is in your passport.

This article is information, not an application service. ApplyEuro helps students from Pakistan get into European universities, where many teaching and education master's programmes are taught in English and several countries charge no tuition. If Europe is also on your list, the Programmes page shows what is open right now, and registering is free.
